It's a slow paced, gentle near-future science fiction (actually now recent past, it is set in 1999/2000). There's a strong sense of fin de siécle tension and isolation. Most of the protaganists have a single-minded devotion to some dream that drives them around the world. There's little physical violence, but the characters emotions are constantly battered. The whole film has constant influences from 1940s film-noir, it comes through the subdued expression of intense emotion. The shots of the Australian outback, where most of the last part is set, show a beautiful desolate landscape to great effect.
The soundtrack is superb too. A range or artists from the late 80s/early 90s such as Nick Cave, Lou Reed, U2, REM, Neneh Cherry and k.d. lang.
