I vaguely remember having heard a while ago that you can use toothpaste as a fine abrasive to polish scratches out of CDs. I just tried it as a last resort on a CD I couldn't persuade even very aggressive software to read. It worked fantastically well, not only does the CD now rip cleanly, but it smells fresh and minty too.
