Tonight was a night out with work colleagues, in a general pre-Christmas spirit of drunkenness. At some point during the evening, I was talking with one of them about the social ties that bind me to Cambridge. This was amply proved over the course of the afternoon and evening by meeting first ghoti in the street who greeted me with a hug, later lnr and mpinna in the Pickeral, then even later <lj nouser=“Steve McIntyre”>, terryfish and nunfetishist in Gardie's. By the end of it my coworkers were asking if there was anywhere in Cambridge we could go without me knowing somebody.

It's true, a whole lot of what keeps me in Cambridge is there are so many great people around here many of whom I've known for a long time.
